This story, set in late 18th-century Venice, follows Teresa, a servant in a musical school for orphan girls, who secretly plays a newly discovered piano-forte with four students, despite tensions with Lucia. Meanwhile, Perlina, the school’s director, struggles with composing a piece for the Pope and rejects Lucia’s work. After suffering personal misfortunes, Perlina sells the piano, prompting Teresa to blackmail the authorities to reclaim it and ensure Lucia’s composition is performed. At the Pope’s concert, the girls sabotage Perlina, perform their own piece, and trigger chaos, leading to the Governor’s death. In the epilogue, Teresa is reunited with her long-lost son, while the girls form a successful traveling musical group.
