The European Music Cultures II series launches with a refined evening dedicated to the golden age of the piano salon, where music, conversation, and culture once converged in the drawing rooms of Europe’s most enlightened circles.
🎭 Performer:
Tony Yang – Piano
The program begins in early 19th-century Vienna, in the intimate setting of Countess Josephine von Brunsvik’s salon—an influential patroness and close confidante of Ludwig van Beethoven. It was in such cultured spaces that Beethoven’s works were often introduced to discerning audiences. His Piano Sonata in C major, Op. 2 No. 3, with its radiant virtuosity and architectural elegance, reflects the spirit of Viennese classicism at its most refined and expressive.
The second half of the recital transports us to the world of Joseph von Witteczek, a devoted admirer of Franz Schubert and a key figure in preserving the composer’s legacy through private performances. In this setting, Schubert’s Four Impromptus, D. 935 come to life—works of lyrical intimacy and understated complexity. Each impromptu offers a glimpse into Schubert’s unique gift for melody and nuance, perfectly suited to the conversational tone of the salon environment.
