The evening opens with George Frideric Handel’s Chaconne in G Major, HWV 435—an exquisite example of Baroque variation form. This work showcases the era’s architectural elegance, with a repeating harmonic pattern that allows for inventive elaboration, uniting structural clarity with expressive depth.

🎭 Performer:
James Napoleon Lai
– Piano (Royal Conservatoire of Scotland)

From there, the program moves into the dramatic world of Beethoven, with his Sonata in F minor, Op. 57—better known as the Appassionata. One of the composer’s most iconic and emotionally intense piano works, it brims with stormy contrasts, lyrical introspection, and heroic defiance. It remains a pinnacle of the piano repertoire, both technically and artistically.

The Romantic spirit then takes full flight with selections from three giants of the 19th-century piano tradition:

  • Frédéric Chopin – Nocturne in C minor, Op. 48: A masterpiece of lyrical melancholy and harmonic complexity.
  • Sergei Rachmaninoff – Preludes, Op. 23 Nos. 2 & 4: Richly textured and emotionally expansive, these works explore both grandeur and intimacy.
  • Franz Liszt – Transcendental Études Nos. 10 & 12: Showpieces of virtuosic brilliance and poetic imagination, capturing the spirit of Romantic piano literature at its most ambitious.
