As part of the European Music Cultures II series, this evening’s recital takes audiences on a musical journey across the great cultural capitals of 18th and early 19th-century Europe—through the salons, coffee houses, and concert halls where music and society intertwined.
Performer:
Giovanni De Cecco – Piano
The program opens in Leipzig, where Zimmermann’s Coffee House famously hosted the Collegium Musicum under the direction of J.S. Bach. The Concerto in F major, BWV 978, Bach’s transcription of a work by Antonio Vivaldi, captures the spirited interplay between Italian flair and German counterpoint, setting the tone for an evening of cultural and stylistic crosscurrents.
From there, the performance moves to London’s Carlisle House, where Johann Christian Bach, often referred to as the “London Bach,” charmed aristocratic audiences with music of cosmopolitan elegance. His Sonata Op. 5 No. 6 in C minor is an exemplar of Classical balance and expressive subtlety.
Next, we arrive in Berlin, where the salon culture nurtured the unique voice of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach. His Sonata in A major, Wq. 55/4, blends the emotional depth of Empfindsamkeit with formal innovation—marking a bold step between Baroque complexity and Classical restraint.
The evening concludes in Paris, with a delightful selection of rarely heard works by Gioachino Rossini. Known almost exclusively for his operas, Rossini’s salon music reveals a lighter, more intimate side of his genius. Pieces such as Spécimen de mon temps and Memento homo demonstrate his wit, refinement, and command of miniature forms—underscoring his deep understanding of both music and human character.
