The European Music Cultures II series concludes with a program dedicated to the refinement and expressive power of the Romantic era, brought to life by award-winning pianist Dimitri Malignan.

The recital begins in the intimate Berlin salon of Fanny Mendelssohn, a key figure in 19th-century musical life. Here, the music of her brother Felix Mendelssohn is spotlighted through selections from Songs Without Words (Op. 19, 62, and 85). These miniatures—rich in melody, nuance, and poetic depth—offer a glimpse into the private, lyrical soul of the Romantic piano tradition.

From Berlin, the evening travels to Paris, to the salon of Marquise Cristina Trivulzio di Belgiojoso—a patron of the arts and political activist. In this setting, Frédéric Chopin’s waltzes and mazurkas unfold with elegance and flair, perfectly suited to the Parisian salon culture. These works, though compact in form, are worlds of expressive detail, effortlessly blending intimacy with virtuosity and evoking a sense of nostalgia for the composer's Polish homeland.

The program concludes back in Berlin, in the salon of Princess Marianne Radziwill, a prominent patron of the arts and friend to Robert Schumann. The concert closes with Schumann’s introspective Romance in F-sharp major, Op. 28 No. 2, followed by the vibrant and mercurial Faschingsschwank aus Wien (Carnival Jest from Vienna), Op. 26—an exuberant work that captures Schumann’s wit, imagination, and rhythmic vitality.
